The UNESCO conference of the second half of the UN decade of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) took place from 31st March to 2nd April 2009 in Bonn/Germany. The main concern of the conference was to discuss the relevance of ESD for the quality of education, the review of the implementation of the UN decade and the development of strategies for further actions. In advance to this conference, VENRO hosted the international NGO conference “GlobalLearning, weltwärts and beyond” which took place from 27th to 29th of March 2009 in Bonn. Representatives of the civil society discussed the previous results of the decade and their challenges.
This documentation reports the implementation of the ESD projects from the perspective of NGOs. More than 100 representatives from 50 different countries contributed to this documentation. The report clearly shows that ESD is more than a theoretical concept as it is put into praxis worldwide in various forms. ESD combines questions of economic, ecological and social sustainability and empowers individuals to take responsibility in a globalized world.
